SPIC MACAY performance at Seth M.R. Jaipuria School

Seth M.R. Jaipuria School, Lucknow played host to yet another enthralling performance on 4rth September, 2018 by the renowned classical vocalist, Padmashree Dr. Soma Ghosh Ji.

SPICMACAY has been associated with Seth M.R. Jaipuria School for more than two decades. Under the aegis of SPICMACAY the Jaipurian family has been witness to legendary artists from time to time. The  programme was a confluence of spirituality and romanticism with Soma ji’s singing which brought this effect musically with her mellifluous rendition of mixing the two styles of the Gwalior Gharana style of gayaki with the technical Semua Gharana. After completing her doctorate, Dr. Soma Ghosh Ji started mixing the two styles which has brought a completely new vision in Hindustani Classical The mesmerizing, soulful music echoed in the hearts if the audience. Soma Ghosh Ji has been decorated with the Government of India Padma Shri award which was conferred upon her in the year 2016, by the then President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. Dr. Soma Ghosh Ji is also called the Gandharva Kokila by the Rotary Club of Bombay Sea Coast and Kashi Kokila by Late Ustad Bismillah Khan Ji.

Born and brought up in Benaras, Soma Ghosh Ji is an exceptional exponent of music in the field of Hindustani classical vocals. A literature graduate from the Benaras Hindu University, Dr.Soma Ghosh ji mastered in Music and completed her PhD in Chhota Khayal. Under Smt. Bageshwari Devi ji she specialized in the genre that typifies Benaras singing, naming a few, Thumri, Kajari, Dadra and Ghazal.

Dr. Soma Ghosh Ji had got the opportunity to perform a Jugalbandi duet, five times with the Late Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan. Amongst  which, one was at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and one at the Parliament of India where she was felicitated by the then President of India, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, and again in 2010 by the then President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil.

 “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul” and certainly Soma Ghosh Ji’s music has touched each and every person present for the programme.
