Frank Anthony Memorial All India Inter School Debate Competition -2014 held at Jaipuria School

The Frank Anthony Memorial All India Inter School Debate Competition, organised annually by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE), is one of the famous school debates in India. Around 1,600 schools take part in the preliminary and zonal rounds to reach one of the seven slots in the final round. The students are divided into two categories – While Classes XI and XII are in Category I, Classes IX and X is put in Category II.

The participants of 5 different ICSE schools from Lucknow gathered inthe auditorium of Seth M R Jaipuria School on 11thJuly, 2014 (Friday) for a battle of wits at the preliminary round of Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter-school Debate(Category II, Stage I), organized by Seth M R Jaipuria School, Lucknow.

The following Schools participated in the debate:

  • St. Francis’ College, Hazratganj, Lucknow
  • City Montessori School, LDA, Kanpur Road, Lucknow
  • City Montessori Inter College, Aliganj, Lucknow
  • Springdale School, Kanpur Road, Lucknow
  • Lucknow Public Collegiate, Jopling Road,

Every participating school had two speakers, one who spoke for the motion and the other, against.
The motion for the House in Category II, stage I was, “Modern living has led to the present environmental crisis”.

The sealed envelope with the topic was opened by Ms. AnjuWal, Principal, Seth M R Jaipuria School, in front of the participants. The host school arranged for all the resource material and opened the gate to their library to help the contestants.

Each participant was allowed four minutes for presentation and two minutes was for the rebuttal round. The clash of words, among the ten speakers from the 5 schools, began at about 10:30am on what seemed to be a deceptively simple topic. The debate lasted for almost two hours, with speakers citing examples ranging from Albert Einstein and Robert Frost to the current affairs. The two minute rebuttal rounds resulted in assertion and a display of vehement conviction skills of the speakers.

Three Judges who graced the occasion were – Ms. RanuUniyal.- Lucknow University, Ms. NiharikaChaturvedi – G. D. Goenka School, Lucknow and Ms. ShaliniTandon – La Marteniere Girls College, Lucknow.

The chairperson who ably conducted the debate and captivated the audience attention was our very own AdityaWaklu,Aditya was the Head Boy of Seth M R Jaipuria School for the session 2013-14, an eminent orator during his school dayshewon many debates and elocutions for the school. He is the city topper in CLAT with an All India rank of 29. Currently he is studying Law in Bangalore. Welcoming the delegates and the participants he boosted the confidence of the speakers and explained the rules of the debate to the participants and motivated them.

The judges applauded the participants on their active participation and guided them for even better performance in future. The Principal, Ms. AnjuWal, congratulated the participants and said that all the children very enthusiastically presented and argued cogently on the topic given to them.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Nikhat Khan who once again emphasized on the performance of each and every school and thanked the judges for taking out time from their busy schedule to attend and adjudicate the contest.

The highlight of the show was that every child went home with a smile. While the winners were awarded merit certificates the rest of the participants were given participation certificates.
