Fun with Gardening

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” – Audrey Hepburn
In today’s day and age we realize the need to preserve and protect Nature and in order to do so we must first connect with Nature.
The students of Seth M.R. Jaipuria Playgroup regularly indulge in gardening activities which they thoroughly enjoy. There are innumerable advantages associated with this activity and it is quite evident how effectively Gardening enhances a child’s power of thinking. They tend to become more curious, ask questions like why plants need sun, how they drink water and why there are worms in the soil etc.
Gardening also encourages children to grow and eat healthy fruits and vegetables.
Children love to get their hands and feet in the dirt, which can be a counter to the modern parenting style of compulsively keeping hands and surfaces cleaned and sanitized. However, consider the “hygiene hypothesis,” a theory that states that lack of exposure to germs in one’s childhood actually increases a child’s susceptibility to diseases and allergies by suppressing the development of the immune system. Therefore, getting a little dirty while gardening may actually strengthen a child’s immunity and overall health.
This activity also develops their gross motor skills and gives them exposure to vitamin D.
In this electronic age, children need time for meaningful family connection. Time in the garden allows for team building and promotes communication skills.

Studies show that when children have contact with soil during activities like digging and planting, they have improved moods, better learning experiences and decreased anxiety. Most importantly, the happiness a child experiences from eating a cucumber that he or she grew himself is priceless.
